Humour Unit Final Assignment

Jake Dibley

Inquiry Question: What is funny?
Your task is to answer the above question by creating something funny and uploading it to your blog.

Step 1:  Produce/create something funny.

Step 2: Write a 1-2 page explanation of why your creation is funny.  Explain what type of comedy you have created and why it meets the criteria of that type of comedy.

Step 3:  Reflect.  In your explanation, include a 1-2 paragraph reflection on the experience of creating something humourous.  What was challenging/easy about the process?
Your creation can be a song, a video production, a short story, a script, a comic, a fake news story (either print or video), or anything else creative (see your teacher).
It must be satire, farce, comedy of ideas or comedy of manners.  The humour should be appropriate for the school environment.
You will complete this task alone or in pairs.

Step 2:
For our humor project we decided to create a video satire depicting the average lines of dialogue that are commonly heard by Collingwood students. It was a spin-off of the now extremely popular series of videos which, have been entitled numerous names including “Sh*t Skiers Say”, and “Sh*t No-one Says”. These videos have hit the internet hard and quotes from them have been the punch lines of cleverly composed jokes, and they are sure to be in continued use for a lot longer. In our video we displayed satire humor, for example, when one of our actors after staring dumbfounded at a test suddenly yelled out “why do we even need to know this?!?” as a classic example of a classic Collingwood Students bratty attitude. The reason that our creation is funny is just that,  it takes the common idea of the average Collingwood student, and it over exaggerates it to make it something familiar that has been warped to make it humourous,

Step 3:
For my humor project, my partner Nathanial and I created a video entitled “Sh*t Collingwood kids say” which was a spinoff of the ever popular series that has come to be extremely well known through the usage of YouTube and of the internet. The task of creating something “funny” is not simple. The reason that I put the word funny in quotations is because funny could mean many different things to different people. So in saying this I am suggesting that perhaps a scene of our video that I found particularly hilarious could be completely dull to someone else, and that created quite challenging. Although I just stressed how difficult creating something “funny” can be, it can also be quite easy. It can be easy because in the process of creating a video, you can get quite into the heat of the moment and ideas can become to flow quite quickly and with much ease.

First Satire Blog Post

1.  This is satire because it is mocking the average American citizen.
2.

Breaking news, earlier today in a Collingwood classroom, a 10th grade asian boy got a B grade on his Math 10 accelerated test. "Students and teachers alike were extremely shocked" said English teacher Ms.Piovesan. "this really did come as a surprise to all of us". However the most surprising part of all of this was the origin of his failure as he simply stated that was "too hard", and that his disappointment came from his lack of studying.

Third Satire Blog Post

The Dictator Trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3C3KzALgzIc&feature=youtube_gdata_player Satire is basically comedy with a purpose. The Dictator is satire because it is mocking the extravagant lifestyles of modern day dictators like Muammar Gadaffi who are plastered all over the news. I think that yes it is funny because it takes a quite serious modern day issue and makes you smile at it. http://www.theonion.com/articles/obama-criticized-for-living-in-lavish-mansion-whil,27238/ This is satire because it is mocking and criticizing Obama about an issue that everyone no is unrealistic to expect a change out of it. I believe that is kind of funny although I believe it would be much more funny if it was more exaggerated and over the top.

Satire

Amusement Park builds life long memories.
“The Cove” once known for its atrocities against dolphins may soon be known as an amusement park esque destination that will be fun for the whole family. According to Taiji Mayor Kazutaka Sangen “You can swim with the dolphins mere hours before they meet their brutal demise”. It truly is a unique experience, after the kids spend the day splashing around in the beautifully red tinted water you can send them off to bed and learn about the rich culture that has been built around years of disrespect for marine life. However this amazing experience doesn’t come free as it costs $399 to spend
a weekend at the resort. This money will go to good use as it will be spent on spear repair, harpoons, and it will be donated to Pro Animal Cruelty charities such as “Clubs 4 Seals”, “This will ensure a better time for both you, and the dolphins” said Hachiro Atsuko the head of maintenance at the resort. So come on down to the park where some lives begin and others end.

What is funny?

I think that there are two types of comedy that i find particularily funny. The first being satire. I find satiristic comedy funny because it sometimes mocks quite serious situations and turns them into a quite enjoyable form. The next form of disputable comedy that i find particulary hilarious is watching people in unfortunate circumstances. I.e. Jackass and other videos on the internet.

The Migrant Experience

My name is Bob, i am what most people call a migrant worker. I left my farm in Oklahoma with all the other ``Okies`` just over a month ago. The reason that we left is because all of our farms dried up, we couldn`t even harvest, this left us no choice but to pack up our belongings and head California bound to look for work. Work was hard to come by, and everytime i did find a little work to do, it definately didn`t last for long. Moving from farm to farm became all to familiar and I often caught myself reminiscing on the days where food came easily. These last few weeks have been extremely hard for me to provide for my family, I can only hope that things getbetterforus.

The American Dream

The American Dream is the idea that any one person, no matter their race, gender or religion, can thrive in the country of America. It is the idea that any one person can build their lives up from nothing, they can literally go from rags to riches. The American Dream is freedom, freedom to live and work in whatever manner you like, however you like with a sense of security. The American Dream is liberty, and the feeling to love and trust those around you. However great this idea sounds, it really is just a dream. America, as a country is hugely in debt, and is not as perfect as some people make it out to be.
